Road Map to Sign Materials

Find the Right Sign for the Job: A Sacramento Sign Shop's Guide to Sign Materials

If you’ve ever shopped for signs and thought “wait, why does this material cost more than that one,” you’re not alone. Most people don’t think about sign materials until they need one, and by then they’re staring down a dozen options with no idea which one actually fits their project.

So we put together this guide. It’s the same thing we walk many customers through prior to the start of any signage project.

Here’s how to match the material to the job:

Coroplast: Yard Signs, Open Houses, and Political Campaigns

Coroplast is that corrugated plastic board you’ve seen on a thousand lawns around Sacramento, from realtor “Open House” signs in Land Park to election season yard signs in every district. It’s outdoor and temporary, weather-resistant, scratch-resistant, waterproof, and printed matte.

If you need something inexpensive, tough, and disposable after a season, this is it.

Foamcore: Exhibits, Displays, and Retail Signage

Foamcore is the lightweight board you’ll find at trade shows, retail pop-ups, and gallery displays. It’s rated for indoor or outdoor temporary use, gives you the best print quality for presentations, and is ultra-light with a matte finish.

If you’re setting up a booth at a farmers market or a weekend event downtown, this is a solid, affordable pick.

PVC: Pop Displays, Tradeshows, and Informational Signs

PVC board steps things up a notch from foamcore. It’s indoor or outdoor and temporary, with excellent print quality, weather resistance, and a matte finish. It’s also more durable and holds its shape better over repeated use.

Good for signage you’ll reuse event after event rather than toss after one weekend.

Gator Board: Presentations, Menu Boards, and Tradeshow Signage

Gator board is indoor and temporary, more durable than foamcore, and prints with long-lasting, vibrant color in a glossy finish. It’s still lightweight, but it holds up better to handling.

Restaurants around town use it for menu boards and specials signage because it looks sharp without the weight or cost of something permanent.

Styrene: Informational Signs, Tradeshows, and Nameplates

Styrene is a semi-rigid, flexible material rated for indoor, outdoor, and semi-permanent use. It prints clearly, holds up to high-quality printing, and stays ultra-light with a matte finish.

It’s a good middle ground for office nameplates, building directories, or informational signage that needs to last longer than a single event but doesn’t need to be permanent.

Acrylic: Directional Signs, Office Signs, and Reception Areas

Acrylic is outdoor and permanent, with high-impact resistance and a glass-like glossy finish. It’s weather-resistant, very durable, and still light enough to mount easily.

This is the go-to for office signage and reception areas around Sacramento, especially in the Midtown and Downtown business districts where clients want something polished for a front desk or building directory.

Aluminum Composite Board: Real Estate Signs and Parking Signs

Built for outdoor, permanent use, this material is weather-resistant and light while still holding up to the elements. It’s the standard choice for real estate signage and parking lot signs.

With Sacramento’s real estate market staying active year-round, this is one of the most common materials we cut for local agents.

Aluminum Heavy Duty: Traffic Signs, Safety Signs, and Warehouse Signs

For traffic control, safety signage, and warehouse use, heavy-duty aluminum is the standard. It’s rated for indoor or outdoor permanent use, weatherproof, sturdy, and still light enough to install without a crew. We also have the ability to apply reflective vinyl to allow for signage to stand out when the sun has gone down.

Sacramento’s Central Valley summers push 100+ degrees regularly, and this material is built to take that kind of heat without warping or fading the way lighter materials will
